I agree that becoming a PMP does not necessarily make an individual a better PM, but it does do a lot for the individual. As I transitioned from a career as an Air Force Acquisitions Officer to Corporate America, I made sure that I had a PMP certification on my resume and am very happy that I did. Great breakdown.
