Earn Free PDUs
By PM Hut
In order to maintain your PMP certification, you have to collect at least 60 PDUs every 3 years. Luckily, you can earn those PDUs for free. Here’s how:
Do Your Job
Since you’re PMP certified, then most probably you’re working in Project Management. For 1,500 hours of project management work, PMI will actually give you 5 PDUs. The maximum number of PDUs that you’re able to collect under this activity is 5 PDUs/year, but you may do this every year. So, for the total of the 3 years, you are able to collect 15 PDUs out of this activity by just doing your job.
Work on Your Project Management Skills
Discussing project management with your co-workers/colleagues/clients, reading books/articles, and other informal tasks that you do in order to advance your career qualify for up to 15 PDUs (you can get them all) per 3 years.
Speak at a PMI Chapter
Just having a speech at your local PMI chapter (or any other PMI chapter for that matter) will have you earning 5 free PDUs. There is no limit on the number of PDUs that you can earn under this activity. So, the more you speak, the more you earn those free PDUs.
Write a Project Management Book
Writing a project management book will just earn you 40 PDUs on the spot if you’re the author, or 20 PDUs if you’re the co-author. Although this is not an easy task to do, it might be worth contemplating.
Write a Project Management Article
Writing a project management article can earn you anywhere between 10 and 30 PDUs. The number of PDUs differ based on whether you’re the author/co-author, and on the journal you’re publishing your article on. Note that you can’t just publish your article anywhere; the journal has to be acknowledged by PMI. Also note that there is no limit on the number of PDUs you may acquire under this activity. Again, this is not an easy task, but same as the book idea above, having something published will not only earn you free PDUs, but a lot of recognition in the Project Management community.
Do Some Project Management Volunteer Work
The best way to earn PDUs under this category is to help some college students with their Project Management activities; eg. guidance, advices, mentoring, etc… Naturally, that the college/university must be recognized and must acknowledge your help to its students.
Quickly revisiting the list above, you can see that you can earn 30 PDUs (point 1 and 2) by just doing your work. The rest of the activities might not be easy, but they will surely get you recognition.

How many PDUs can I get to write an article like this?
What should I do to get them?
Hi Ray,
You can get 15 PDUs/article published on a decent Project Management website (that includes PM Hut). Of course, PMI has to approve your article. You will also need to give PMI the address of the publisher, which we will gladly supply once you have an article published here.
