		<description>I disagree that portfolio assessment and realignment is a result of poor strategic planning. That is unless your business strategy, customers, competitors, constraints, and assumptions remain static for the planned horizon. 

Most business environments are dynamic and thus require frequent assessment and prioritization / realignment to maximize results. Managing a portfolio is a lot like managing a project - change happens.</description>

		<description>I my view this approach is a very necessary bandaid.  The root cause of needing to align projects with the strategy is that the organisations strategic planning process is broken.  In a mature, strategically aware, organisation the main key projects are identified from the strategy.  Strategic thought first then the project idea.  So the necessity for alignment is completely removed.

The problem is that in a lot of firms strategic planning is not mature and projects "bubble up" rather than being created from the overall vision.  In these cases this alignment exercise is essential.</description>
