Project Scope Management

Project Scope Management includes managing all of the work required and agreed on with the stakeholders during the design phase (and only the work required and agreed on), to complete the project successfully.

A clear and well defined scope is very important for the completion of any minor or major project on time.

Project Scope Management comprises five processes:

  • Scope Planning (Planning Process Group)
  • Scope Definition (Planning Process Group)
  • Create work break down structure (Planning Process Group)
  • Scope Verification (Monitoring and Control Process Group)
  • Scope Control (Monitoring and Control Process Group)

Dhanasekaran, Sivaraj is a certified PMP and works as a Senior Project Manager in one of the leading MNC banks in Singapore. He has over 13 years IT experience and handled banking projects as well as managed production support team for complex Treasury applications for various MNC banks.

I always think that Scope Management also has an implicit purpose. It is also about
- managing stakeholder expectations
- modelling different project/scope scenarios
- modelling different project delivery opportunities

If scope management planning takes these implicit purposes into account, then the baseline scope will have much more rigour and a higher likelihood of key stakeholder buy-in.

No, no, no! Project scope management is about work throughout the project, not just what was agreed to during design! The design phase itself has scope and must be managed.
