The Importance of a Project Portfolio
By Moises Ortiz
All projects within an organization should be aligned to the company’s strategic goals and the investment made on those projects should have benefits that are expressed in how they meet those goals.
A company’s project portfolio will help on representing the entire investment in projects.
If you have a consolidated repository for all your projects you will have an easy way to prioritize each project for the strategic value, financial value or risk it may have. You can also select the optimal projects for the portfolio that meet the budget and business constraints that best align with your organization’s business strategy.
Projects within a portfolio can be grouped into programs meaning that those projects are managed together in order to gain efficiencies in time, cost or quality. Programs may facilitate the monitoring of each investment to help ensure they realize the forecasted benefits.
You can always optimize your project portfolio to help maintain continuous alignment with your organization’s strategic goals.
