The Project Management Process Framework
By Moises Ortiz

All of the work you do on a project is made up of processes. Once you know how all these processes fit together you will have the knowledge to run your projects smoothly.

But, what is a process?

Think of a process as a black box that takes some inputs and inside the box there are some tools and techniques that are used to do the work and turn them into outputs.

Talking about a project management process, its inputs will be some documents, policies, templates, etc. The tools and techniques will take those inputs and turn them into other kind of documents like plans, schedules and of course the actual product you’re building.

Be clear that you can use the same input in more than one process. And some process outputs may be used as inputs in others.

According to the PMBOK Guide, there are 44 processes that are organized in two ways:

Process Groups. These groups organize the processes on how you do the work. There are 5 process groups named Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, and Closing.

Knowledge Areas. The areas organize the processes by the subject matter you’re dealing with. There are 9 knowledge areas known as Integration, Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, Human Resource, Communications, Risk, and Procurement.

Download my Process Framework Document so you can have a better view of these processes and its organization according to the PMBOK Guide.

Notice that every process belongs to exactly one process group and to exactly one knowledge area. And that a knowledge are has many processes and they can span some or all of the process groups.
