What is Monitoring and Controlling Process Group?

As usual we look at the layman term first before PMBOK 3, the Monitoring & Controlling process group helps to monitor the project progress with the purpose of ensuring the project is on track to meet its objectives; to identify issues & problems; to find resolutions to sort out the identified issues & issues; and to track project schedule, status, and cost.

PMBOK 3 definition is as follows:

The Monitoring & Controlling process group is where project performance measurements are taken and analysed to determine if the project progress is aligned with the project plan. This will assist to identify the issues & problems and take corrective actions to meet the project objectives. While taking corrective actions, the PM may re-visit the earlier process groups such as planning and executing.
